Notes
Metro systems on the Iberian peninsula started fairly early and expanded throughout the 20th century. Immediately after the convulsions of the First World War, Madrid opened its first metro line in 1919, and Barcelona followed five years later. There was a long hiatus in the opening of new Spanish systems until late in the century, when Valencia started in 1988 and Bilbao seven years after. Portugal, meanwhile, opened its first metro system half-way through the century, in 1959, and is now building a new one in Oporto.

The current series of maps (at least from the 1990s) are strikingly similar to Beck's maps of the London Underground.
