New York Subway Maps

  This is a catalogue of maps of the underground railway system of New York. This list is maintained by Peter Lloyd in London, England. Please e-mail any comments, corrections, or additions to me at ursa@easynet.co.uk. This is a private web site, and I have no connection with the bodies responsible for rapid transit in New York or anywhere else. The information given here derives largely from my own collection of maps, but the development of this list has benefited greatly from collaboration with John Rofrano and Charlie Sokol. The responsilibility for any errors lies with myself.

A separate Notes Page contains a brief history of the Subway and detailed notes for the individual maps. [Click here to pop up the notes page.]

The index has been split into two files, one for 'governmental' maps and one for 'private' maps. The former were issued by the public authorities for the subway -- first, the Board of Transportation, then the New York City Transport Authority, and now the Metropolitan Transport Authority. Such maps were issued form 1940 onwards, when the New York Subway came under a single governmental authority. The private maps include 'official' maps issued by the subway companies (either sold or, more usually, issued free to passengers), 'commercial' maps issued by other publishers and sold, and 'promotional' maps that were printed with advertisements and issue free of charge.

Key to map lists

  In the lists of maps, the leftmost column indicates my estimate of the likely date. Where the map itself bears a printed date, then of course I have used that. The rightmost column indicates my source of information. Mostly, these lists are based on my collection, but I have also included information from other collectors where my own collection is deficient. The sources are as follows:
P = Private collection
B = BMT Lines, www.bmt-lines.com
e = eBay auction, www.ebay.com.
R = John Rofrano.
G = Todd Glickman, www.nycsubway.org/faq/maplist.html.
C = Charles Sokol
S = SubTalk bulletin-board at www.nycsubway.org.
i Inferred from the edition numbers.

I have cited the source of any map details that I have not been able check with my own collection. In addition, I am also happy to acknowledge that I have benefited from observations and commentary on the map from several sources, including Todd Glickman's notes on the changes between successive editions of the map; Charles Sokol's numerous corrections of this list; miscellaneous comments in SubTalk on www.nycsubway.org; and information provided by sellers on eBay (especially New World Maps, who provide very full and careful descriptions of the maps).
