Modifications to list of NY Subway Maps

1. Corrections & additions from Charles Sokol

January 2002

  1. Correction: 1965 World's fair map: This map has a copyright date of 1964, not 1965. Comment: The 1964-1965 New York World's fair was closed for the winter of 1964-1965. This map must have been issued late in 1964, after the fair closed for the winter, with the World's Fair map on the back corrected for the 1965 season of the World's Fair. In the earlier 1964 map, in the World's fair map on the rear, there is an entry for "Belgium", whereas in the second 1964 map (for the 1965 fair season), the entry is "Belgian Village". The 1964 and 1965 editions of the Official World's Fair Guide use the same nomenclature ("Belgium" in the 1964 edition and "Belgian Village" in the 1965 edition). In addition, the late 1964 edition of the map includes two panels advertising the Chase Manhattan bank. Source: Both of the 1964 subway maps and both the 1964 and 1965 editions of the Official New York World's Fair Guide Book are in my personal collection.)

  2. Addition: 1969/10 map: You can delete the "?" after "elevated line", as this is correct. Comment: The Myrtle Avenue El was an early elevated line that was built in the late 1880's or 1890's. I actually rode a train on the line once. As you stated, the older part of the line (from Bridge-Jay Street to Broadway [Brooklyn]) was closed in October 1969.
  3. Correction: 1972/2nd ed; 1972/4th ed; 1972/2nd ed; 1974/3rd ed; 1976; 1977/04; 1978/02 maps - Your description of the cover "enlarged Midtown section of the map" is incorrect. The enlarged section on the cover panel is not midtown (Manhattan), but is centered near downtown Brooklyn, at the BMT DeKalb Avenue station. Source: I have all 4 1972 maps in my personal collection.

  4. Addition: 1972/4th ed - The copyright date is "© 1972(2)" Source: I have all 4 1972 maps in my personal collection.)

  5. Comment: 1972/1st ed; 2nd ed; 3rd ed; 4th ed - Since both the earlier 1972 map ("© 1972") and later ("© 1972(2)") maps are available with both the line circles and DeKalb Ave. area map covers, I suspect (but do not know conclusively) that both map cover types were available concurrently.

  6. Correction: 1975 - I believe that this entry may be an error. I have not seen nor heard of a 1975 map. I believe that the late 1974 map (without the Culver Shuttle) was used in 1975, and the E-bay person who listed it may have obtained the map in 1975, but it was a 1974/3rd ed map. Source: I have the two 1974 maps with the Culver Shuttle. I do not have the map without the Culver Shuttle, but Todd Glickman includes it on his list.)

  7. Addition: 1979 - The cover includes part of the E, B and D line strip maps. Source: I have this map in my collection.)

  8. Correction: 1980/Q3 - There are two variants of this map. One variant includes part of the E, B and D line strip maps (same as on 1979 map), and the other variant includes part of the 5 and 6 line strip maps (same as on the 1983 and later maps). Source: I have both variants of this map in my collection.)

  9. Addition: All maps, 1983 to 1988: The cover panel includes part of the 5 and 6 route strip maps. Source: I have many of these maps in my collection, and they all have the 5/6 strip maps on the cover panel; also, on Todd Glickman's list, he indicates that these maps include part of the 5 and 6 route strip maps on the cover.

  10. Correction: Probable error on Todd Glickman's list; not on Peter Lloyd's list - Todd lists a "1983" map, but not a "Spring 1983" map. I suspect that Todd's "1983" entry is an error for the "Spring 1983" map, with the copyright information "© 1979 revised Spring 1983". Source: I have the Spring 1983 map in my collection, and I do not know the existence of a "1983" map, other than Spring 1983.

  11. Correction: 1985/3rd ed - I believe that this is an error, and that it describes one of the Fall 1985 map variants that are on your list. Source: I do not yet have either of the Fall 1985 variants, although I will be getting one of them in about two weeks as part of a map trade. Todd Glickman lists only one Fall 1985 map. His description for this map includes: "Box on front describes service changes due to Brighton line and Manhattan Bridge construction. The H returns to the Rockaways (replacing E/CC)! K appears as 8th Ave. Local". This matches your description of a 1985/3rd edition "© 1979 revised 1985" map.)

  12. Addition: December 11, 1988 - There is a third variant of this map without "Effective December 11, 1988" on the cover, but with "As of December 11, 1988, subway service is revised." in a box entitled "Important Information About This Map" on the back side above the copyright information. The copyright information includes "© 1988 2345678 22-30-1080". Source: I have this map in my collection. Correction: When you have a chance, the December 11, 1988 map entry that you added to your map index, in response to my comments has an error. ... In the ... entry, the text ... "December 11, 1988 (on cover)" should be deleted, as there is no date on the cover. All three of the December 11, 1988 maps have the box on the back of the map which says "As of December 11, 1988, subway service is revised.", and then goes on to explain the route changes. The only difference between this map and the map listed above it in your index is the absence or presence of "Effective December 11, 1988", at the top of the cover panel.

  13. Addition: October 29, 1989 - There is a second variant of this map without "Effective October 29, 1989" on the cover, but with "As of Sunday, October 29, 1998, subway service is revised." in a box entitled "Important Information About This Map" on the back side above the copyright information. The copyright information includes "© 1989 23456789 22-30-1090". Source: I have this map in my collection. Correction: My comments to you on the December 11, 1988 map entry attributed to me are also applicable to the October 29, 1989 map entry attributed to me. Neither of these maps have the date on the cover panel. The date appears only on the back in a box describing the route changes.

  14. Addition: April 15, 1990 - This map includes "Effective April 15, 1990" on the cover, and includes "As of Sunday, April 15, 1990, JFK Express service will be discontinued." in a box entitled "Important Information About This Map" on the back side above the copyright information. The copyright information includes "© 1990 2345678". Source: I have this map in my collection. Also, as this map also shows the N train routed through the tunnel, rather than over the Manhattan Bridge, it probably is the "1990" map on Todd Glickman's list which includes the following in its description, " Manhattan Bridge south side closes sending N to tunnel. JFK Express is gone!")

  15. Addition: August 1994, Multilingual Edition. Source: E-Bay item number 1062454074, which includes a picture of the map cover showing "August 1994" on the cover, and a list of languages. I do not have this map. [The auction closed Jan. 19, but this item can still be viewed on E-Bay.])

  16. Addition: "The Official New York City Tennis Subway Map" (1998 edition): Cover: "The Official New York City Tennis Subway Map". Cover is a watercolor of part of the Bronx map, with a large tennis ball in the middle. Inside the map, to the right of the 1998 copyright is the date "March 1998". COMMENT: There was no 2000 edition of the tennis map, and 1998 was the first one.

  17. Addition: "The Official New York City Tennis Subway Map" (1999 edition): Cover: "The Official New York City Tennis Subway Map". Cover is grey with a full color map of midtown to lower Manhattan. Inside the map, to the right of the 1999 copyright is the date "May 1999".

  18. Correction: On your listing of the 2001 "Official New York City Tennis Subway Map", you indicate that "March 2001" appears on the cover, but it does not. You also indicate that on the inside of the map, there is a date of "July 2001" to the right of the copyright date, but, in fact, on all copies of this map that I have seen, the date to the right of the copyright date is "March 2001". I have been told that there is only variation of this map. Was I misinformed and is there a variant of this map with "July 2001" on it?

  19. Addition: Z-Card PocketMedia Map: Cover: "Wherever you're going, maybe our ATM's should be your first stop. citibank live richly Enter for a chance to win $1000 August 1 thru September 4, 2001". Map: One side covers Manhattan in its entirety, and small parts of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. The map on the other side shows Manhattan from the Battery to around 125th Street and includes the locations of Citibank branches.
