STRESS MANAGEMENT

Hypnotherapy techniques vary. The technique I use involves calling forward the 'active parts' of the subconscious that are preventing the client from being able to relax, and making it a challenge for them to overcome their feelings of worry, anxiousness, nervousness ... and stress.

More often than not these feelings are symptoms - symptoms originating in deeper, closely held belief about themselves, often filed away in the subconscious mind. The root of the symptom may be a belief, a negative thought, thoughts from others that a person may have accepted about themselves and began thinking were true ... even though they were not ...

The root of the symptom may be a label, a phrase or a script oft repeated in childhood. "Susan ... could do better ... you'll never do any good unless you work harder. She or he will never amount to anything."

Two outcomes are possible ... This person may live out the script exactly as told, or they might 'do whatever it takes' within the work arena, and within the family to prove otherwise ... to ensure the 'script' does not come true... and they potentially will continue to honour their commitment not noticing the mounting evidence to their success... long after the original 'writers' of those scripts are dead.

People will do anything to know that they are loved... and in work so many of us will continue to stretch ourselves with potentially detrimental effects to 'prove our worth', to our boss, to the company. The result is stress, and an inability to feel our own success.

If only someone would say 'Well done' to these people... or they themselves could learn to 'pat themselves on the back'! With hypnosis that is possible.

How does what I do alleviate stress?

Under hypnosis, I bring forward the parts of the subconscious which are making it a challenge for the client to relax. A 'part' is rather like an autonomous program in a computer. Each presenting part will have a name and a function in the person's mind. That name may be an emotion (such as fear), a personality trait (such as perfection), a colour or symbol like sunshine, or a personal name. Parts may have evocative names like - 'good girl' 'good boy' 'try harder' 'drive'. Whatever is appropriate for each individual will step forward. Once the file is open in the subconscious mind and can speak of its purpose, the part is gently and respectfully challenged, and is advised that now that the client has decided to progress her life - this part is not supporting her in the best way possible. The part has a choice: it can choose to take a rest, or be more active in a positive way. Most parts want to be team players, and will agree to change their role. So, the part is asked to put forward three possible behaviours that will advance the client's life and quest for relaxation, and is then asked to choose the best one. (Sometimes it may be advantageous to take them all on). Having chosen, the subconsious is asked whether it is ready to make the change. If not, other parts are invited forward to voice their objections, and each in turn is asked to choose three, and then select one behaviour. Finally the change is made, and the subconsious is asked to confirm that the work will be carried out, properly, permanently, and correctly.

Since the subconsious will by nature attempt to find any weakness in the contract, it is important to guide the part so that there is no loophole. Once the contract is 'signed, sealed and delivered' visualisation is used to carry the client forward into the future in order that they can see themselves exactly as they will be with this new script embedded deep in the subconscious mind.

Why does it work?

Because so much of our behaviour began as a script years ago, therapeutic hypnosis lets you over-write the script with a new one for the benefit of the person you are now and the person you want to be. It is not unusual for the changes to occur almost immediately, because the choice for change comes from within you. You are using a power within to choose choice and to choose change for the better. The subconscious is in control and it runs only on the scripts it has inside.

The richness of the human mind is recognised in hypnotherapy, especially in the method of parts that I use. The distinct forces that make up the psyche are separated out and allowed to speak for themselves.
